ASSISTANT COACH – ROCHESTER 2024

John Sciera played football and lacrosse at both the high school and college levels. While attending Ithaca College he served as a graduate assistant lacrosse coach to Ray Rostan. Since graduating from college, Sciera has coached high school football and lacrosse. He started the lacrosse program at Livonia where he enjoyed coaching his two sons Scott, who now coaches lacrosse at the Mynderse Academy in Seneca Falls, NY, and Brian.

Sciera initiated an FCA Huddle at SUNY Geneseo where he has coached with Jim Lyons for the past 8 years. He sees FCA as another affiliation through athletics to build faith and views it as a natural offshoot of his own faith in which he believes his role as a coach is: “to make disciples of Jesus.”

As a coach, Sciera is aware of the podium he has and makes it his goal to use that platform to impact others for Christ. “To have any kind of positive effect on any athlete — even one — and to see kids whose lives have turned around through faith – it makes it worth it.”

Recently retired from a 33-year career as a physical education teacher with the Geneseo Central Schools, Sciera resides in Springwater, NY. An avid hunter and fisherman, Sciera also enjoys camping and kayaking with his wife Melinda.
